General Information

The Academic Challenge is a competitive series of tests created and administered by Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering and offered to high school students in Illinois and Missouri. The tests are now offered by more than 50 community colleges and universities and are designed to present a challenge to the brightest students.

Test material is drawn from senior high school and freshman level college curricula. Written by teams of college and university faculty, subjects include biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics, and physics. Each test production team produces three tests of increasing levels of difficulty, regional, sectional and state finals. Students compete as individuals and as part of a team (when their school fields a team); they have 40 minutes to complete multiple-choice tests that range in length from 30 questions (computer science) to 100 questions (English).

Eligibility Requirements

Sophomores:  Any student in honors math, English, AP Computer Science, or Project Lead The Way who maintains a grade of A and has excellent test-taking skills

Juniors:  Any student in honors or AP math or English, AP Biology, AP Physics, AP Computer Science, or Project Lead The Way who maintains a grade of A and has excellent test-taking skills

Seniors:  Any student in honors or AP math or English, AP Biology, AP Physics, AP Chemistry, AP Computer Science, or Project Lead The Way who maintains a grade of A and has excellent test-taking skills
Joining Procedures

See eligibility requirements.  Any student meeting the above course requirements may join.  Additional members may be obtained through teacher recommendation.

The varsity team consists of 14 members.  The team will be chosen based on past team experience and performance on practice tests taken during team meetings.

A junior varsity team of approximately 8 members will be determined prior to the regional.  The junior varsity team will only compete at the regional.
Time Commitment
Team members must commit to studying their two chosen subject areas for regional, sectional, and state competitions on their own time.  It is suggested that members study for a minimum of 5-10 hours per week for at least two months prior to the regional competition.  Practice tests and supplemental material will be provided for study.
Meets
Beginning in mid-October, team meetings will be held once every two weeks on Mondays in Room B5 immediately after school.  Depending on team advancement, meetings may occur through early April.
